Moving is a complicated process that takes patience, skill, and organization. Unless you have moved several times before, you are bound to feel a little lost at some point during your relocation. You might start thinking that you bit off way more than you can chew, or get that uncomfortable feeling that you are forgetting something important. But don’t let fear overcome you – if it does, you could make a mistake that can impact your overall moving process. Do your best to stay focused and collected.
In order to help make your moving process error-free, we at State to State Movers put together a list of the most common mistakes people make when moving – and how to avoid them.
Don’t Forget to Organize
Before you get down to any real work, create a moving calendar. The best choice would be to print out a large visual calendar with enough space for you to write on. You can note down the tasks you intend to do on a specific date, and cross off days as the moving day approaches. But even more important than making a calendar is sticking to it! Don’t skip a day saying “I can do that tomorrow”, or “This is not that important”. The calendar is there for a reason, so don’t underestimate its importance.
Don’t Pack Everything
Whether you are packing on your own, or decided to have a professional moving company do it for you, you should set aside some essentials that you won’t pack with everything else. Your moving day will definitely be a little chaotic, so you will want to have certain necessary items with you at all times. Set aside a box or a bag that you will carry with you on the plane (or in the car, if that’s your plan). In it, put all the essentials you might need – a set of clean underwear, pajamas, a toothbrush and some toothpaste, your phone charger, and so on. Once your moving day is over, the last thing you will feel like doing is digging through boxes just so you can brush your teeth before going to bed.
Don’t Forget – Safety Comes First
Whatever you do, be cautious. Even if you are late according to your schedule, don’t rush things. This can easily lead to some decisions you haven’t thought through properly. This is especially true when it comes to packing and loading your belongings. Don’t try to lift that sofa on your own rather than wait for your friend who is running late just because you want to get it over with. You are unlikely to do anything productive if you are injured. Rather, reorganize and do something lightweight while waiting for help.
If you are going to participate in the packing and loading process, another thing you should do is learn the proper lifting techniques so as to avoid potential injuries. Make use of dollies, sliders, straps, and other equipment.
Your own safety will most likely not be the only one you will have to worry about. If you have pets, don’t let yourself forget about them. Keep them hydrated, feed them regularly, and keep them away from any places where they can end up injuring themselves.
Don’t Do Things Last Minute
Does your moving calendar say that you will have to take some crucial steps (such as packing) on the very day of the relocation? If so, you need to reorganize it. Don’t leave a single task for the moving day. There are several reasons for it:
– You will be in a haze. You will most likely be super-excited about the relocation, and if you try and do anything in that state of mind, more likely than not, you will forget something important.
– You will be in a rush. The movers will be there any minute now, and your computer still isn’t packed? Don’t let that happen. It will make the job harder both for you and for the professionals.
– There are other things to do on your moving day. Leave the moving day for thinking through everything once again and potentially remembering things you may have forgotten over the previous weeks.
